The Best Grinder for Kief

I grew up on the east coast and while a weed grinder was never very far away, I hardly ever used them. Breaking up weed with your fingers was just what everyone did. I even researched how to make a weed grinder once since they seemed such a simple construction. Well, some are simple, but a good grinder is not that simple. The best grinder for kief is a three chambered grinder that catches the kief in the bottom chamber.

And, now that I am all grown up and after I have learned so much about this complex plant, grinders are the way to go. Anyone with a weed smoker kit should certainly include a grinder. It preserves your stash, does a better job breaking up weed and if you are cleaning grinders that you use, then it is more sanitary than using your fingers.

As I said, good weed grinders are three chambered metal grinders. The first chamber is where you will find the teeth and the top is typically magnetic to keep it sealed well and so that you can easily spin it back and forth to break up the weed. Simply shove buds into the teeth, push down the magnetic grinder top and twist back and forth with your hand. On many plastic grinders, there is just the one chamber and so when you are done grinding up the weed you just tap it out. But, on a three chambered grinder, the weed will fall through slots into the second chamber once it is ground up into small enough pieces.

You need two sides of a container to push together with the weed in between and something inside that will separate the weed. Let’s go back to the three chambered metal weed grinder. The ground up herb that has fallen through the slots of the first chamber into the second chamber is now ready to go. You will see separations in your grinder and notice that you can unscrew the first chamber from the second chamber. Unscrew it and you will find your herb perfectly ground up and ready to be rolled or packed. You will also notice that at the bottom of the second chamber there is a screen.

The screen at the bottom of the second chamber of your grinder sifts the kief from the weed and lets it settle into the third and last chamber. After repeated use the screen can start to detach on the sides if you have been putting to much pressure on it when you remove your ground up weed. So, be gentle with the screen to make it last as long as possible. You will find that a solid metal grinder can be a consistent and durable tool for you to use for a long time.

That leads me to how to clean a metal grinder. Like everything else in our lives, cleaning grinders is something that just has to get done. Herb can get stuck in the teeth and residue can build up in all three chambers that mold can eventually begin to grow on. Mold is not good, you don’t need me to explain that to you. Just like cleaning a glass pipe, rubbing alcohol is always a good way to clean a metal grinder. You can find a grinder cleaning kit, but what you really need is a rag or paper towel, wet it with some rubbing alcohol and rub down the inside of your grinder gently. It will be looking brand new in no time.

The three chambered grinders are the best grinders for kief because of that third and final chamber. Once the kief sifts through the screen of the second chamber, it settle in the third chamber of the grinder and builds up over time. The third chamber is shallow and will unscrew from the bottom of the second chamber. Inside you may find a beautiful emerald green dust has built up called kief. Kief is the dried up trichomes of the flower and it is full of the good stuff and is quite potent. Sprinkle a little of it into your next session or try cooking with it.
